This was the third arrival in my Inbox and the first of the new album not to sound as though it was telling me an out-and-out “weird” story, although it would still be some time before the twin themes of the album became apparent and gave it its name.

In common with Suburban Nostalgia’s “Summer Flight,” the music instantly suggested a sunny summer’s afternoon to me – there must be something about late spring/early summer that makes Annie pen “feel good” music – but this time round I was still slightly influenced by the two tracks that had gone before. I wanted the song to be something more than a fluffy flight of fancy. I think we’ve achieved that, since the tale is actually about a woman waiting for her lover to arrive for an afternoon tryst. Is he married? Is she married? We don’t know, but it seems to me that the situation isn’t totally straightforward!

Sun in the back yard
Throws a light on the door to your next life
Oooh, and it’s open
Asking for you to come in
Inside I’m standing alone beside myself cos
I’ve been waitin’ for you
For love in, the afternoon

Rain on the window
Splashes in through the door to your own mind
Oooh, and it’s open
Showing you where you should be
I’m there again, all alone, cos there is something
I’ve been wantin’ to make
Make love in, the afternoon

Close the door and drop the blinds
And leave the worries of the world behind
We can be happy
Cos I know what’s on your mind

Tears in your eyes now
Lock the pain in a chamber of your heart
Oooh, and they’re open
Looking at me while I sleep
But I’m awake all along, I’ll dry those tears cos
I’ve got somethin’ for you
More love in, the afternoon

Close the door and drop the blinds
And leave the worries of the world behind
We can be happy
Cos I know what’s on your mind

Yes I’m awake all along, let’s rock and roll cos
We’ve got somethin’ to make
Make love in, the afternoon
Make love in, the afternoon
